What is Marlborough in Bloom?
Marlborough has been entered, for the sixth year running, into the South West in Bloom (SWIB) competition. SWIB is part of the umbrella organization, Britain in Bloom. We have come a long way since those first tentative steps in 2014, to achieve a Gold Awards in 2017 and 2018, year, quite a triumph for the town!
Local residents have formed a small committee to run the event with some welcome input and support from representatives of the Town Council. The event is judged by SWIB judges, who will visit the town between the 3rd and 17th July 2019 - the exact date will be announced so you can put it in your diary! The committee work out a route for the judges to walk each year, but any part of the town that may be passed through will be observed by the judges, which is why this really is a whole town competition. Judges can of course - and do - visit the town at any time, wander through our streets, up the alleyways or drive around. Ideally the whole town will look neat, tidy and where possible gardens, or simply containers and baskets will be blooming lovely.
So what is an IYN?
Some very active local groups enter the "It's Your Neighbourhood" section. This can range from tyres used as planters for flowers, (eg entrance to St Margaret's Mead) to Stonebridge Wild River Reserve. It's something anyone in the community can do. The list of IYN entries for 2019 is on the IYN Projects page. Judges are delighted to assess and encourage the volunteers and community groups' work. Perhaps you are doing something we don't know about - or would like to start a sustainable project - please let us know. This year you could enter the IYN section - it is not competitive, but you will get a rating each year and a certificate. Your project can also be chosen for an award at the discretion of the judges - some of our Marlborough IYNs have already won a trophy!
How does the Marlborough Garden Competition fit in?
This is an in-house competition run by the Marlborough in Bloom committee and once again this year, every house will receive a card with the details from a great supporter, Henry George. There are different categories - Best Garden, Best Courtyard Garden, Best Commercial Display and Best Container/Hanging Basket. As you can see, this ranges from the huge to the tiny. It includes residents and businesses. The competition is judged from a person outside of Marlborough so there is no bias and the winner announced on the same day as Marlborough is being judged as a town. The closing date for entry will be the end of May 2019.
