2021 Competition
Marlborough is on track for another ‘blooming marvellous’ entry into South West in Bloom
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has announced that this year’s South West in Bloom competition is going ahead
Marlborough Town Council is leading this year’s entry into the RHS South West in Bloom Competition, working with some of the town’s wonderful community groups, shops, pubs, businesses and local volunteers to ensure Marlborough is looking its best for the judges and our residents and visitors alike. Plans are well underway to make 2021 the best possible entry for the town. We are aiming high!
The judging date has yet to be confirmed, but it will take place on a weekday in July. We are currently finalising the route and as soon as we have these two elements confirmed, we will let you all know. More hands certainly make light work and so if everyone could help by doing ‘their bit’, which could be as simple as sweeping up in front of their home, shop or business, putting out a colourful planter or hanging a basket, it really does help enormously.
“We are delighted to be entering this year’s competition, having had a break away from it last year. It is going to be a challenge as the timings are rather tight this year and judging day will come around very quickly, but we have a proactive, experienced team here at the Town Council and some willing and able volunteers, full of ideas and keen to keep Marlborough on the map. We can most definitely do this!”
- Nigel Weatherly, Grounds Manager for Marlborough Town Council
Running alongside the main competition are the RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood entries (IYN’s). This is a part of the competition which enables volunteer led community gardening projects/groups who are focused on improving their local environment through community gardening to get involved. They can be working in their local street, estate where they live, a back alley they share with their neighbours, or just a shared outdoor space. Almost any outdoor site being looked after by the local community qualifies for this scheme. RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood is an inclusive, non-competitive scheme and a group can be made up of any number of people. We have some wonderful IYN’s already running here in town, but if you think you might want to get involved in this, please talk to Val Compton, one of our lovely volunteers, who, along with her neighbours, formed a group to make a community garden in Kennet Place. Val is full of great ideas and infectious positivity and is on hand to offer guidance to anyone interested in getting involved this year.
